Donald J. Trump has made history again: The first person elected to the office of U.S. President to be impeached twice; and now the first U.S. President to be indicted and arraigned twice, his earlier indictment and arraignment having took place in New York for a separate case during the spring. And with more potential charges being investigated, this might not be Trump’s final indictment.
Arraigned most recently in Miami, Trump is facing down charges from the U.S. Department of Justice regarding classified documents that he took from the White House and kept illegally.
The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) made repeated requests for Trump to return the documents that he took. He refused for months, and then finally turned over 15 boxes of records. The contents of those boxes prompted NARA to alert the Justice Department, because the boxes contained files with classified markings, including 92 marked as secret, and 25 marked as top secret.
The Justice Department then requested that Trump return all of the documents that he took. Upon his stonewalling and refusal, the Justice Department obtained a warrant to search Mar-A-Lago, Trump’s resort and home. The search conducted by the FBI turned up more than 13,000 additional government documents, including nuclear-related information, along with FBI, CIA, and NSA documents regarding national security.
